Steamboat Symphony Orchestra’s 35th Season:

An American Soundscape

As the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra celebrates its 35th season, we also join the nation in honoring America’s 250th birthday. This milestone season invites audiences to experience the sounds, stories, traditions, and shared memories that shape American life, from iconic songs heard across generations and the cinematic power of John Williams to the warmth of the holiday season and music brought to life through movement.

Rooted in Steamboat Springs, this season reflects the spirit of Americana through mountain landscapes, Western heritage, artistic ambition, and the strong sense of community that defines our Colorado story.

Whether gathered under the summer sky for the hits that filled American radio, immersed in the world of a blockbuster film, sharing the songs and traditions of a mountain holiday, or swept into a spring celebration of music and dance, the SSO’s 35th season will be bold, nostalgic, adventurous, heartfelt, and deeply connected to place. An American Soundscape is a celebration of the music that moves us, the stories that connect us, and the community that brings it all to life.

SPECIAL EVENT

Founders Concert

Honoring Mary Beth Norris and the Legacy She Created

  • Sunday, September 6, 2026
  • Yampa River Botanic Park
  • 4:00 PM
  • Please RSVP for this event

Join us in the beautiful Yampa River Botanic Park for an intimate early-evening concert honoring Steamboat Symphony Orchestra founder Mary Beth Norris and the extraordinary legacy she created.

Conducted by Ernest Richardson, the program will feature the SSO String Orchestra alongside guest soloists Patrick Williams, Paul Nagem, and Teresa Steffen Greenlee, with prelude music provided by Emma Shubin. Patrick, Associate Principal Flute of The Philadelphia Orchestra, is a former student of Mary Beth’s, making his return to Steamboat especially meaningful for this celebration.

Through music, memories, and the gathering of musicians whose lives have been touched by the SSO, Founders Concert will celebrate Mary Beth’s lasting influence on generations of musicians and on the community she loved.

Attend Founders Concert by donation and enjoy the performance from the lawn with your own chair or blanket. For an elevated experience, VIP seating is available for $50 per person and includes a reserved chair in the front seating section and a complimentary drink ticket. Guests may also add a commemorative Mary Beth Norris champagne flute or a charcuterie box for two when reserving.

Jurassic Park in Concert

  • October 10 at 7:00 PM
  • October 11 at 2:00 PM
  • Strings Music Pavilion

For this extraordinary production, the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra will assemble its largest orchestra to date, with more than 70 musicians performing John Williams’ legendary score live as the complete film is projected through the orchestra.

Performing an entire film score live to picture is one of the most virtuosic and technically demanding challenges in symphonic music. Originally composed and recorded in short, precisely timed sections, every moment of the score must now be performed live in perfect synchronization with the film.

Hear this iconic movie in an entirely new way, surrounded by the power and excitement of a live symphony orchestra.

The action-packed adventure pits man against prehistoric predators in the ultimate battle for survival. Featuring visually stunning imagery and groundbreaking special effects, this epic film is sheer movie magic 65 million years in the making.

Now audiences can experience Jurassic Park as never before: projected in HD with a full symphony orchestra performing John Williams’ iconic score live to picture.

Welcome… to Jurassic Park!

An Immersive Film and Orchestra Experience

This unique concert experience brings the live orchestra and full-length film together in a single field of view, allowing audiences to watch the musicians perform the score as the film unfolds above them. Because the orchestra is positioned in front of the screen, the bottom portion of the screen may be partially obstructed from some seats. Seating tiers and prices will reflect the degree of screen visibility from each section.

A Mountain Holiday

Songs We Share

  • December 4 at 7:00 PM
  • December 5 at 2:00 PM & 7:00 PM
  • Strings Music Pavilion

Some find the spirit of the holidays in the first snow, while others find it in family gatherings, glowing main streets, candlelit services, festive celebrations, or traditions passed from one generation to the next.

Across America, the season has its own unmistakable soundtrack, shaped by cherished carols, jazz and swing, gospel, Hollywood classics, and songs that bring treasured memories rushing back.

This December, your Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, alongside our charismatic guest vocalists, brings that soundtrack to life with joy, wonder, and the music and traditions we return to year after year.

However you celebrate the season, the SSO brings the sound. And the snow!

America in Motion

Music and movement celebrating the American spirit

  • April 30 at 7:00 PM
  • May 1 at 7:00 PM
  • Strings Music Pavilion

The Steamboat Symphony Orchestra closes its 35th Season with a vibrant celebration of the dreams, landscapes, stories, and sounds that have shaped the American imagination.

Presented in partnership with Perry-Mansfield, this special concert brings orchestra and dance together in a program spanning classical music, Hollywood, and Broadway. Dancers from Perry-Mansfield will join the orchestra for select works, adding movement and visual storytelling to music inspired by ambition, adventure, and the wide-open American spirit.

The program will feature the sweeping lyricism of Erich Wolfgang Korngold, whose celebrated Violin Concerto carries the romance, heroism, and cinematic grandeur of his Hollywood scores, alongside music by Aaron Copland and other composers who helped shape an unmistakably American sound.

Together, music and dance bring the season to a joyful and inspiring close, celebrating the hopes, aspirations, and shared experiences that continue to unite us.
