SUMMER IMMERSION CAMP

SSO Summer Immersion offers focused, inspiring camps for young string players and developing woodwind and brass musicians. Students build strong technique, play in ensembles, work with experienced teaching artists, and grow in confidence, all in a fun, supportive, community-centered environment.

Friday 6/26 students will perform in a free Celebration Concert at 12pm

Designed especially for our youngest string players, this camp builds strong foundational technique through small ensembles, musical storytelling, composer adventures, and interactive music games that bring learning to life.

Students develop confidence, creativity, and connection while having fun in a nurturing setting.

Who Can Join?

  • All String Sprouts students
  • String players working through Suzuki Books 1–2

A dynamic and inspiring week for developing wind players. Students work closely with instrument specialists, perform in ensembles, explore improvisation, receive focused individual instruction, and strengthen musicianship in a collaborative setting.

This camp is designed to elevate skills while fostering friendship and teamwork.

Who Can Join?

  • Brass and woodwind students with at least one year of experience
  • Students through grade 12

In addition to the morning camps, intermediate and advanced string students may register for evening masterclasses. These sessions provide deeper musical exploration, individualized instruction, and focused artistic growth in an intimate setting.

Teresa Steffen Greenlee

Bio

Teresa Steffen Greenlee is the concertmaster of the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra and performs regularly as first violinist of the Steamboat String Quartet. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in violin performance from the University of Wisconsin School of Music and earned her Juris Doctor degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School. While living in Madison, Wisconsin, she played in both the Madison Symphony Orchestra and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra. Residing in Steamboat Springs for the past 20 years, Teresa has been on the front lines in the growth and development of the Steamboat Symphony and its education programs as the director of the Youth Immersion Program and the Steamboat Springs High School Orchestra. She maintains a private music studio of over 35 violin and viola students and is committed to helping to create an exceptional learning environment for local classical musicians.

April Kondrat

Bio

April Kondrat is currently the Director of Orchestras at Plano Senior High School in Plano, TX and Principal Violist with the Plano Symphony Orchestra. She was a regular substitute violist with the Dallas Symphony and Dallas Opera until pursuing a full-time career as a music educator. An advocate for the viola, Mrs. Kondrat was the founder of ViolaWorkshop which ran from 2012-2015 and had a thriving studio of violists from around the metroplex before becoming a full-time orchestra director. She continues to offer private lessons, sectionals and clinics on the viola and is always striving to help music educators understand the mystery behind this fine instrument. Her clinic, “Raising Violas”, was presented at the TMEA Clinic and Convention in San Antonio in partnership with Mary Havenstrite and again at the Art of Teaching Orchestra at SMU. She also regularly performs chamber music and has performed new works for the violan with student orchestras in the area. Mrs. Kondrat now teaches String Pedagogy at SMU as a guest lecturer. She is an avid runner and resides in Plano with her husband and three musical children.

Jeremy Kondrat

Brass

Bio

Jeremy Kondrat has been the conductor of the GDYO Wind Symphony since 2019. He currently serves as the Coordinator of Instrumental Music in the Plano ISD.

Mr. Kondrat began teaching jazz techniques at Southern Methodist University in 2018. Since 2015, he has been a frequent guest conductor and fanfare conductor for the Dallas Winds. He has led the McKinney Community Band as artistic director and conductor since 2016 and conducted the Imperial Brass since 2011.

Mr. Kondrat previously served fourteen years as the Director of Bands, Co-Conductor of the Symphony Orchestra, and Jazz Ensemble Director at Plano Senior High School. He was the Associate Director of Bands at Plano SHS for two years and served one year positions as Director of Bands at McKinney High School and Associate Director of Bands at Cudahy High School in Cudahy, Wisconsin.

The Plano Senior High School Wind Ensemble was awarded the National Wind Band Honor Award in 2009 under Mr. Kondrat’s direction. He co-conducted the Plano SHS Symphony Orchestra at the Texas Music Educators Association Convention in 2007, 2009, 2012, 2014 and at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2003. The Plano SHS Jazz Ensemble directed by Mr. Kondrat was invited to perform at Lincoln Center at the Essentially Ellington Jazz Band Festival and Competition in 2005 and 2010. Plano SHS was awarded the Grammy Signature School Gold Award twice while Mr. Kondrat served as Director of Bands.

Mr. Kondrat received a Bachelor of Music degree in music education and trombone performance from the Eastman School of Music in 1995. He earned a Master of Music degree in trombone performance from the University of Northern Colorado in 1997. Mr. Kondrat is an active clinician, conductor, adjudicator, and consultant for band, orchestra, and jazz ensembles throughout the United States. He has also performed extensively as a trombonist with the Dallas Winds.

Mr. Kondrat is married to his amazing wife, April, who grew up as a violist in the GDYO. They live in Plano, Texas with their three wonderful children Emily, Rachel, and Ethan.

Jason Olney

Woodwinds

Bio

Jason is an active freelance musician in the Denver area, performing across the Front Range in a wide range of settings, from orchestras and musical theater pits to chamber ensembles, educational programs, and even genres spanning Mariachi to metal. He serves as Principal with the Symphony of the Rockies and Boulder Symphony, and has been featured frequently as a soloist. Jason also performs regularly with the Steamboat Springs Orchestra, Denver Philharmonic, Boulder Opera, and the Wild Beautiful Orchestra.

A dynamic and dedicated educator, Jason works with students across Colorado in classrooms, sectionals, and private lessons. Known for his patient and individualized approach, he meets students where they are and helps them build clear paths toward progress. He directs several independent band programs for Denver elementary schools and provides instruction in clarinet, saxophone, and trumpet.

Jason lives in Denver, Colorado, with his fiancée, too many instruments, even more plants, and a perfect set of cats.

Desiree Suarez Ward

Bio

Desiree Suarez Ward, originally from Venezuela, began playing violin in Boulder Public Schools at age 10. She earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Northern Colorado and continued graduate studies at the University of Minnesota, later becoming a fellow of the New World Symphony.

An accomplished soloist and orchestral musician, Desiree has performed throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia, and South America, and has worked with renowned conductors including Michael Tilson Thomas and Ernest Richardson. She has performed with ensembles including the Boulder Philharmonic, Fort Collins Symphony, Colorado Opera, and Steamboat Springs Orchestra.

Desiree is also a dedicated educator and currently teaches orchestra at Addenbrooke Classical Academy. She lives in Lakewood, Colorado, where she enjoys family, church, and gardening.

Ruth Meintz

Bio

Ruth Meints is an acclaimed violinist, violist, educator, and arts advocate with a lifelong passion for making music education accessible to all. She serves as Artistic Director of the Omaha Conservatory of Music and is the creator of the nationally recognized String Sprouts program, which provides free early childhood string instruction and instruments to underserved students.

Ruth holds degrees in violin performance and Suzuki pedagogy from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. She is a sought-after clinician and speaker, presenting workshops nationwide on music education, motivation, and child development. Ruth is honored to join Summer Immersion and inspire the next generation of young musicians.
